April News Round Up

Here is a round up of all the exciting updates for our campaign during April

A Season of Milestones at the Six Bells

At the end of May, we had the pleasure of welcoming Ruth Jones MP and Newport Council Leader Dimitri Batrouni to the Six Bells  just in time for Peterstone’s very own Nature Day, held in support of the City Nature Challenge. It was a day of celebration, learning, and connection, and we were proud to showcase how far we’ve come on our journey to bring the Six Bells back to life.

Both Ruth and Dimitri shared fond memories of the pub in its heyday, and we’re incredibly grateful for their encouragement and ongoing support. Their belief in our vision to restore the Six Bells not just as a pub, but as a thriving community hub means the world to us. A space where people can meet, learn, shop local, and connect with the incredible landscape of the Gwent Levels is coming into focus, and we couldn’t do it without your support.

Peterstone’s Nature Day: Celebrating the Gwent Levels

This Nature Day was a fantastic event, organised in partnership with Our Living Levels, the Gwent Wildlife Trust, and the Newport Local Nature Partnership. Together, we brought nature to the forefront with hands-on activities and wildlife discoveries, inviting our community to celebrate and protect the unique natural beauty of our region. We were proud to take part in the City Nature Challenge — a global initiative with very local roots!

Coffee, Cake & Community: Our Monthly Morning and Repair Café

Our monthly Coffee Morning, held on the last Saturday of every month, is going from strength to strength and now includes a hugely popular Repair Café! There’s something for everyone:

  • Families: A spacious hall for children to play and a cosy toy corner to keep them entertained
  • Coffee & Cake Lovers: Enjoy delicious homemade bakes and a proper cuppa
  • Community-Minded Folks: A chance to catch up with neighbours or make new friends
  • Fix-It Fans: Bring your wobbly chairs, broken ornaments, loose buttons or well-loved toys — our brilliant volunteers are on hand to help!

Join us next time and be part of this growing, grassroots movement to reduce waste, share skills, and strengthen community ties.

Save the Six Bells: A Major Milestone

We’re excited to share that Save the Six Bells has made it through to the next stage of the Welsh Government’s Community Facilities Programme Fund! We’ve applied for £300,000 — a potential game-changer that brings us one step closer to bringing the Six Bells into community ownership.

This programme supports projects that create opportunity, prosperity and resilience by empowering people and places — everything the Six Bells stands for.

Reflecting on Our Progress

In the spirit of looking ahead while celebrating the journey so far, here’s what we’ve achieved together:

  • £50,000 raised
  • £700,000+ in grant and loan applications pending
  • 87 shareholders
  • 38 volunteers
  • 3,500 supporters
  • Recognised at Downing Street

Thank you to everyone who’s helped us reach this point — from donating, volunteering, and spreading the word to simply turning up for a coffee. Together, we are building something extraordinary.

Let’s keep going - Let’s Save the Six Bells!
